Sri Lanka is a beautiful island situated in the Indian Ocean at the tip of the India.

In 4th century king Vijaya and his men settle down in Sri Lanka and gradually became a Sinhala Buddhist country.

In 1815 British won the control of whole Island and ruled up to 1948.

In the same year citizen of Sri Lanka won the independence from British and formed first independent government by D.S.Senanayaka.

Mainly population of sri lanka consist of majority Sinhalese and minority Tamil, Muslim, Burger, Male community.

Intolerance of Tamil people

1970 Government of sri lanka passed two pieces of legislation increased Tamil concern. The first piece, cut Tamil numbers in universities; previously, Tamils had won a relatively high proportion of university places. The second was the constitutional declaration that Buddhism had ‘foremost place’ in Sri Lanka and that it was the state’s duty to ‘protect and foster’ Buddhism.

Unrest grew among northern Tamils, and a state of emergency was imposed on their home regions for several years from 1971. The police and army that enforced the state of emergency included few Tamils (partly because of the ‘Sinhala only’ law) and therefore came to be seen by the Tamils as an enemy force.

In the mid-1970s some young Tamils began fighting for an independent Tamil state called Eelam (Precious Land). They included Vellupillai Prabhakaran, who founded and still leads the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), often referred to as the Tamil Tigers.
